The Algonquin Tribes

The first Algonquin Tribe is the Tuscarora. The Tuscarora dominated the coastal plainsin the 1500's. The Tuscarora had about fifteen large villages each with about 300-500 people,concentrated near two rivers the Nuese and the Tar river. The Tuscarora where kin to a large and mighty tribe called the Iroquois that where based out of present day New York possibly came south in the 1400's. The Tuscarora people had flat bodys but only one explorer every noted this. The way did this was they tied children to a flat in their infancy.

The Catawba

The next tribe of north carolina is the Catawba and these people where located beyond the fall line, more than a dozen tribes lived in the rolling hill Piedmount area. Some North Carolina places where named after these tribes. Although their where dozen of tribes the Catawba was the largest of them all.Catawba sometimes call them self the wa meaning the people that lived on the river. They where distiguished buy the burnt black pottery they made with various clays found in the area. The people in these area spoke different variations of the language Sioux.


The Cherokee

The Cherokee is the most famous indians in North Carolina's history, both for there size and there location. They lived in the upper stretchs of the Ohio River. They where kin to the Iroquois, but they did not have as good relation ship as the Tuscarora tribe had with the Iroquois. Cherokee first setteld in the moutains
